How Marine Spec started

Before Marine Spec, finding accessories that made my reef tanks tidier and more useful was a challenge. In the end I bought a 3D printer and designed my own bespoke products. I was pleased with the results, so I decided to share them with other reefers.

It began as a way to improve my own setup, and it quickly became something more. Today it is a small business run from my home, rooted in community, sustainability and a shared love of marine life.

What I make, and how it is made

The range covers somewhere for new frags to settle, a tidy way to feed nori to herbivores, and a home for pods in a sump. You can see it all in the 3D printed accessories.

Magnets and saltwater are a tough combination, so I spent 2 years refining ours. Each magnet is sealed inside a bonded plastic capsule before it goes into the print. I also culture live phytoplankton, copepods and baby brine shrimp in house for the live foods, and I take on custom projects in 3D print and recycled acrylic. Past builds include a 3 tier hybrid frag rack, 7 inch filter cups, a Fluval Evo rear lid, signage for my own water dispensing system and 100 matten filters for a local fish store.

The business behind the name

Marine Spec is a trading name of HJM CREATIONS, a sole trader business based in the UK, and it is run from my home in Suffolk. Most orders are dispatched the next working day, and shipping costs are shown at checkout. If you have a question about a product, an order or a project, you can email me or message me on WhatsApp and I will do my best to help.

The racks, feeders and pod hotels are my own designs. Each is printed in a range of colours, with sealed magnets where it needs them, and you can pick the glass thickness and magnet strength that suit your tank.

Why community matters to me

The friendships I have made through this hobby mean the world to me. Whether it is learning from fellow reefers, sharing ideas or live streaming with like minded people, the sense of camaraderie in this space is something truly special.

Looking after the reef and the people in it

Sustainability is at the heart of what I do. I use eco friendly packaging and recycled acrylic wherever I can, and every order plants 1 tree through Ecologi. 10% of profits go to marine conservation and mental health charities, so a purchase helps a bigger cause as well as your tank. The details are on the our impact page.

The Spiritual Reefer on YouTube

Beyond Marine Spec, I run a YouTube channel called The Spiritual Reefer. I share my reefing journey through mindfulness, patience and the deeper connection between nature and our tanks.

The channel covers the reef community too. In 2025 I shared a short video called Reefing Saved Me, about the healing journey you do not expect, and the Coral Freaks 2025 series, which includes talks with Julian Sprung, Tony Vargas, Jamie Craggs, Corey Treadwell and Salem Clemens. In April 2025 I explained why I rebuilt my sump into a frag tank. Browse the video page to see the latest.
